Syria Reactivates Representation to Chemical Weapons Authority

(MENAFN) Syria has restored its permanent delegation to the international chemical weapons oversight body located in The Hague.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the country has reestablished its permanent mission to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague and named Mohammed Katoub as Syria’s envoy to the organization, as reported on Thursday by a news agency. Earlier this month, the ministry indicated that the First Committee of the UN General Assembly had adopted, with wide global backing, a resolution emphasizing a period of constructive and advanced collaboration between Syria and the OPCW.

On March 5, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani took part in a session of the OPCW Executive Council for the first time.

Following the outbreak of Syria’s uprising in 2011, forces loyal to President Bashar Assad, who was ousted last year, conducted 217 chemical assaults, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights.

These attacks include the large-scale chemical massacre in Eastern Ghouta and Muadhamiyat al-Sham on Aug. 21, 2013, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,400 civilians—among them hundreds of women and children—and left over 10,000 others injured.

The Syrian government acceded to the OPCW on Sept. 13.

That same month, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2118 concerning Syria’s chemical weapons program.
