Turkey’s FM participates in NATO talks in Brussels
According to diplomatic sources, Fidan will also conduct several bilateral meetings on the sidelines with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, as well as the UK and Spanish foreign ministers, among other counterparts.
The Brussels gathering will review outcomes from the NATO Summit held in The Hague in June and provide the first opportunity for foreign ministers to exchange views on preparations for the 2026 NATO Summit, which Türkiye is scheduled to host in Ankara on July 7-8.
The NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting will take place in two sessions. The first session, attended exclusively by NATO member states’ foreign ministers, will focus on priority topics on the Alliance’s agenda. Discussions will cover recent developments in Euro-Atlantic security, including the Russia–Ukraine war and NATO’s eastern flank, policies regarding the southern neighborhood, the situation in the Balkans, and Asia-Pacific developments impacting Euro-Atlantic security.
During this session, Minister Fidan is expected to highlight Türkiye’s contributions to European security and the Alliance through its modern military capabilities and defense industry. He will brief allies on preparations for the NATO Ankara Summit and stress that strengthening NATO’s European pillar should complement, rather than duplicate, EU defense initiatives. He is also anticipated to emphasize that EU defense initiatives should remain open to all NATO allies, including non-EU members, and to underline the importance of removing barriers to defense industry cooperation. Fidan will additionally highlight Türkiye’s participation in NATO missions, including its leadership of the NATO-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) this October, marking the second time Türkiye has assumed command.
The second session, convening the NATO-Ukraine Council, will include Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha and EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas. Discussions will center on the Russia–Ukraine war, diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, and ongoing reform processes in Ukraine.
In this session, Minister Fidan is expected to reaffirm Türkiye’s support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He will also share details of Türkiye’s assistance to Ukraine, stress the importance of pursuing diplomacy to achieve a just and lasting peace, and outline Türkiye’s perspectives on recent developments while expressing readiness to contribute to any peace-oriented process.
