NATO States Delivering Tangible Results will be Prioritized in Ankara Summit

(MENAFN) NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska stated on Monday that the alliance’s upcoming summit in Ankara this July will focus on implementing previous decisions and producing tangible outcomes.

Speaking at the Oslo Security Conference in Norway, Shekerinska highlighted that all allies had agreed at last year’s Hague summit to allocate 5% of their gross domestic product to defense spending by 2035. “The Ankara summit will be focused on implementation and delivering concrete results,” she said.

Shekerinska emphasized that following through on the 5% commitment would remain a top priority, including plans for an industry day to enhance cooperation with defense companies. “We will organize an industry day focusing very much on how we can support industry and how we can use additional funds better, but hopefully without creating additional costs,” she explained.

The deputy secretary general underscored the need for increased joint procurement, deeper cooperation, and innovative approaches to meet capability targets. “Let’s do more joint procurements. Let’s try to cooperate more, and let’s insist on more innovative solutions when looking for the right capability targets,” she said, noting these issues will be central to the summit’s agenda.

In addition, Shekerinska confirmed that strengthening support for Ukraine will be a key topic at the Ankara summit. “The situation is and was dire,” she said, highlighting ongoing fighting and intensified attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure. While peace efforts remain the current focus, she stressed that continued military support is crucial. “We know that the focus now is on the peace process, but we also know that we have to continue with this support because, as you can see even today, the fighting has not stopped,” she added.

“These three things will be our focus as we head toward Ankara,” Shekerinska concluded, referring to implementation of prior commitments, industrial cooperation, and support for Ukraine.
