Dutch Regulator Flags Risks of Algorithm-Driven Social Media Feeds on Public Opinion

(MENAFN) A Dutch media regulator has warned that social media platforms are increasingly undermining users’ ability to form a “free and informed opinion,” citing concerns over how algorithmic systems shape online information consumption.

According to a report referenced by public broadcaster NOS, growing numbers of users in the Netherlands—particularly younger demographics—now rely on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and X for news and current affairs.

The regulator noted that these platforms use recommendation algorithms that determine what content appears in users’ feeds, often prioritizing posts that are emotionally charged, sensational, or controversial in order to maximize engagement.

It further stated that social media companies have commercial incentives to amplify attention-grabbing material “even if it is unreliable,” while users generally lack meaningful control or transparency over how their feeds are curated.

The report also highlighted concerns about practices described as “shadowbanning,” where certain accounts or posts may be quietly reduced in visibility without clear notification to users.

Officials warned that platform operators are increasingly shaping the flow of information online, describing algorithm-driven content distribution as “demonstrably risky for democracy.” The report argues that such systems can amplify polarizing or misleading narratives, potentially deepening social divisions and influencing public discourse.

In response, the media authority called for stronger enforcement of existing European digital regulations to improve transparency and accountability in online information ecosystems, according to NOS reporting.
