Dutch Patriot Missiles to Stay in Poland Through December

(MENAFN) The Netherlands will extend the deployment of its Patriot air defense systems and approximately 150 military personnel in Poland for up to six additional months, reinforcing protection for a critical NATO logistics hub used to support Ukraine, according to media on Monday.

The Dutch deployment at Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport in southeastern Poland had been scheduled to conclude in early June. However, NATO and Polish authorities requested that the mission continue amid ongoing security concerns linked to the war in Ukraine.

Situated less than 100 kilometers (62 miles) from the Ukrainian border, the airport has become one of the alliance’s most important transit points for the delivery of Western military assistance to Kyiv.

Announcing the extension, Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius emphasized the Netherlands' commitment to both NATO and Ukraine.

“This decision underlines our support for Ukraine and shows that the Netherlands stands ready when NATO and allies call on us,” Dutch Defense Minister Dilan Yesilgoz-Zegerius said.

The operation forms part of NATO’s rotating air defense mission, under which alliance members periodically contribute personnel and military assets to safeguard the strategic hub.

The Netherlands assumed responsibility for the mission from Germany in December 2025, deploying an expanded package of defensive capabilities that included Patriot missile batteries, NASAMS air defense systems, and counter-drone equipment.

Under the revised plan, the Patriot systems and around 150 troops will remain stationed in Poland until at least early December. Other Dutch air defense assets and personnel involved in the broader deployment are expected to return home later this month.
