Faces of Keen Sword 27 - Joshua Dilone

In Japan, Exercise Keen Sword 27 is underway between the U.S. military, Japanese Self-Defense Forces, and members from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and the Philippines. Keen Sword is a multilateral exercise dedicated to preserving peace and stability in the region, and strengthening the ironclad alliance between the U.S. and Japan. At the Military Training Complex on Sagami Depot, the U.S. military is hosting joint training on cyber, intelligence and security operations between the U.S., Japan, and other partner forces participating in the exercise.

U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Dilone, an operational specialist, is serving as the common operational picture manager for the military training complex at Sagami Depot, Sagamihara, Japan. “I manage the tracks of air and surface movement, and ensure our partner nations can see their tracks and any tracks that might be interfering,” he said.

This is Petty Officer 2nd Class Dilones’ first time participating in Exercise Keen Sword. “Seeing all of our partner nations coming together, even with our language barriers, and still be able to conduct our duties and complete our mission is really cool and truly incredible,” he said.

Dilone said his favorite part of the exercise was meeting servicemembers from partner nations. He said, “I’ve met people from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces, New Zealand, Canada, and the Philippines. It’s fun to have interactions with them, learn how they conduct their duties, share parts of our language and learn parts of theirs.”

“I’m glad to see everybody so committed to the success of this exercise, and eager to work with each other and realizing that we can accomplish anything we put our minds to despite a language barrier,” Dilone said.
